[Adam Outler] has been pretty heavy into mobile device hacking lately. The biggest problem with that field is recovering from back flashes or development firmware glitches. In many cases you can use a JTAG programmer to reflash stock firmware to resurrect a handset. Unfortunately you’ll be hard pressed to find a phone that comes with a JTAG header, and soldering to the microelectronic boards is not for the faint of heart.

But a solution is here, [Adam] pulled together a wide set of resources to create a package to unbrick Samsung phones. Now we’re sure that there’s more than a handful of people who would argue that a bad firmware flash that can be fixed this way means that the phone wasn’t actually “bricked” in the first place. But what we see is one more barrier torn down between being a hardware user and becoming a hardware hacker. You’re much more likely to get in there and get your hands dirty if you know that you’ll be able to undo your mistakes and reclaim you precious pocket hardware. See just how easy it is in the video after the break.

WARNING !!! You're doing all of the following at your responsibility!!! No one here will be responsible if you haven't read the guide completely and then you have damaged your phone beyond repair!!! You have been warned!!!

Hi dear MIUI users,
Recently we have seen a lot of threads asking for help with bricked Mi4 device. Most of them are because people tried to flash Windows 10 rom on Mi4 WCDMA variant or leaked version of beta MIUI Marshmallow without following a correct procedure.
In most case it's hard to know what to do, so if you're a bit lost this thread is for you! It will be splited in three parts, first one is how to fix a device bricked because of an incorect MIUI Marshmallow flashing procedure, the second one is dedicated to Windows 10 and last to special brick.
Prerequisite :
- Latest version of MiFlash tool : 20150601 Install it following @paramgagan 's thread
- In both case you'll need a Mi4 fastboot rom : Here is the latest (5.12.10 global developer rom) Extract the rom in whatever folder you want
- For brick caused by new partition layout you'll need one of this MiFlash script : Flash-Scripts.zip(3.46 KB, Downloads: 5267)
Click file name to download
Download cost : Experience -1
(they comes from MIUI china dev rom)
I- Fix a brick from MIUI Marshmallow improper udate

Mains reason of this brick is following an improper procedure. Problem comes when you try to use MiFlash to restore your bricked phone. Such message appears :

Partition error.jpg(15.56 KB, Downloads: 44)

This message is caused by the new merged partitions, Originally we have :
-2 system partition that are approximately 640 Mb each
-2 Modem partitions that are approximately 60 Mb each.
MIUI Marshmallow update make :
-1 system partition of 1,4 Gb
-1 modem partition of 120 Mb
With such partition layout MiFlash tool can't find the required partitions and returns and error, rom is not flashed. So here is how to go back to a stable MIUI KitKat rom.
First step is to force reboot in fastboot mode, get sure that your battery is not nearly empty to avoid phone going off during flash procedure, it would only make things worst. No matter if you're stuck on a bootloop or stuck as first Mi screen. Launch MiFlash program, just plug your phone to the computer and long press 'power' + 'volume down' buttons simultaneously and don't release 'volume down' untill your phone goes to fastboot mode

boutton.png(43.05 KB, Downloads: 34)

official-fastboot-logo.jpg(38.31 KB, Downloads: 35)

Press these buttons and here is what you shoud get on your screen

Now your phone is in fastboot mode press refresh on MiFlash app, you should get a screen like this :

Sans titre.png(15.97 KB, Downloads: 51)

Here my device is correctly connected and in fastboot mode, ready for flashing. If your device doesn't appears and it's screen remains dark don't panick, try again. You device might get detected without being in fastboot mode and with nothing on screen (com port mode)

It time to extract fastboot rom somewhere on your computer, use an app like winrar to do so. Here is how the folder should look like :

rom folder.png(73.19 KB, Downloads: 56)

Note that the rom directory should not contain any special character, to get sure I extracted it on my C:/ drive

Now rom is extracted you need to replace one of it's flashing script (.bat for windows), replace them by the ones downloaded in this thread, they will revert to kitkat partition layout (unmerged) :
  • flash_all.bat : erase all your phone storage, even your data stored on internal storage like pictures, music and so on
  • flash_all_except_storage.bat : I would recommand it as it just wipe you app and system partition, you'll lose call history, messages, apps and so on but you keep your datas
  • flash_all_except_data_and_storage.bat : don't use it, as you'll downgrade your android version it would lead to app force close
Same scripts exists for Linux, but their extensions are .sh instead of .batHere are the script that need to be replaced :

Scripts.png(73.3 KB, Downloads: 46)

Now all is fine at this step and fastboot rom is extracted somewhere on your Hard Drive, press browse and go select your fastboot rom folder :

Browse.png(15.33 KB, Downloads: 34)

rom.png(29.39 KB, Downloads: 34)

Rom selected.png(16.97 KB, Downloads: 35)

On the last image you can see that the rom has been correctly selected

Select one of the script : flash_all or flash_all_except_storage

Flash script.png(2.8 KB, Downloads: 33)

Now just press flash button and wait until the procedure gets complete (couple of minutes), your phone will reboot and tada! Brick is now fixed!

Complete MIUI.png(18.15 KB, Downloads: 35)

Mains reason of this brick is flashing Windows 10 on an Mi4 WCDMA variant, in that case you wait for hours for first boot, but your phone keep showing Mi logo. It won't boot. Keep in mind that Windows 10 is only for Mi4 LTE and don't try flashing it on your phone if you're unsure.

First step is to enter the download mode, basically it's the same procedure as Fastboot mode, hold 'power' and 'volume down' button until your phone get force rebooted.

Note : if device is just stuck for some minutes download mode will just shows a '!' mark instead of current download mode, and device restarts and get stuck to Mi logo again. Just wait some minutes more, give it time to configure all modes, and try again.

Once you get boot on this special mode that is basically like Android's fastboot you just need to press MiFlash tool's refresh button :

Refresh windows.png(15.23 KB, Downloads: 41)

Here the device is identified as COM10, it's a bit different than

From this step go to the upper tutorial on step 3, flashing procedure is exactly the same as MIUI one! (from I- 3°)

Important note (thanks to @philip_petev ): First flash may just stop after flashing the bootloader, this is because the phone reboots into 9006 com port mode. Device number changes and your phone is no longer detected by your MiFlash tool. Don't panic, just :
  • Close MiFlash Tool
  • Reopen it
  • Once again press refresh
  • Select the rom folder
  • Select the script
  • and flash!

Here I'll develop how to fix a special brick case, it's rare but it can happend to you. Your phone is totally bricked, there is not any light led blinking even if you plug your phone to a wall charger and when you plug it to your computer several windows pops and showing corrupted drives asking you to format them is order to get them working properly.

Remember first thing to do : NEVER FORMAT THESE 'DRIVES', SERIOUSLY, IT CAN'T HELP YOU!

All following stuff is here thanks to our beloved mod @philip_petev and @dexxa05 for his post.
You need this tool, which is QPST, here are the links : MegaGdrive and extracted fasboot rom (See I- 3°)
Reboot your phone like for Fastboot or download mode byt pressing 'power and volume down buttons
Install this tool and launch the 'eMMC software download app' :

EMMC.png(75.21 KB, Downloads: 45)

EMMC launched.png(38.54 KB, Downloads: 47)

Now click on the 3 dots menu, and go to your fastboot rom folder, select the flash.xml file

EMMC launched.png(38.57 KB, Downloads: 39)

flash.png(60.49 KB, Downloads: 37)

selected flash.png(38.6 KB, Downloads: 37)

Now configure your sofware like this :

Configuration.png(44.42 KB, Downloads: 40)

  • 1 : Square 1 has to be checked, your device should appears as COM10
  • 2 : You need to enter these names, you can copy/paste them from here :
Copy the Code

Copy the Code

  • 3 : This square has to be unchecked
  • 4 : This square has to be checked
  • 5 : Select your fastboot rom path
  • 6 : once all is done press this button
